Heather Tolletson—a local sculptor who does work at the 3D Atelier studio here in Austin—is having a group show this Saturday. Unfortunately, I have 2 other events to attend that night. Maybe I'll be able to go! It looks like an intriguing show.

I found this slideshow while searching for something else. I think it's a wonderful comparison of Henry Moore and the African and Pre-Columbian sculpture that he drew his inspiration from. (Too bad there's no mention of the book these images were scanned from.)

I have finally gotten around to taking some photos of the slab-constructed sculpture I've been working on for several months. This is my first slab piece, and it's been an adventure!
The piece is based on a Henry Moore sculpture he did in the '40s. One of his many, many works entitled 'Mother and Child'. I obviously had a tough time interpolating the back and side of the sculpture based on a single three-quarter view photo.
In the end, I'm pretty happy with it. I feel much more confident with the technique and the material. As my instructor says: "It's just dirt!"
Hi!
I decided to dedicate this blog to sculpture in general and to sculptors and sculpture-related events specific to Austin, Texas.
I chose the stone lion as my avatar because it reminds me of being a little kid in Padova (Padua), Italy. I have a vague memory of my mom letting me "ride" on top of a similar lion sculpture. I remember the feel of the cold, smooth stone, and I remember loving how massive the lion felt under me.
There are many things that I appreciate about having lived outside of the US. And one of the things I value most about having spent a few but formative years in Italy is having grown up around—and living daily surrounded by—art of all kinds: architecture, murals, religious art, and, of course monumental figurative s
culpture. There is something about massive stone that spoke to me even as a little kid... about time, permanence, and impermanence.
